(Earlier in the day she'd been fine.) Herman, the lead chicken, was trying to peck at her - not a good sign! I scooped up Hermione and we took her into the house and put her in a dog kennel padded with straw. She was hot, dazed, and with a really slow pulse. That night she wouldn't touch any water. But the next morning she was a little better, and sipped water - then gulped water, then pecked at a little food, and now she's up and around, although still weak. I think I'll let her enjoy life in the air conditioning a few more days.

The Dog Days of August

Texas is hot in August. Really hot. The radiator on our tractor exploded and it's in the shop awaiting a new one. The sheep and the chickens and the dogs all file into the run-in shed around eight a.m. for shade and water and no one emerges until dinnertime or later. The garden is over - nothing can withstand the daily 104 degree heat. I certainly can't. While I wait it out for cooler weather I'm working on my queen-sized quilt. It's up on the quilting frame and I quilt for an hour or so every morning. I'd do more, but I've never used a thimble and my index finger gets incredibly sore. If anyone has any thimble tips, I'd love to hear them!
